Choosing a “Home Repair Specialist”

Who Do You Let Inside Your Front Door?

Summer is a time when many decide to tackle those home improvement projects. You put in the research and thought up a game plan, but still need to hire a professional who can get the job done right. Updating your home can add value to your property, but only when done correctly. So, it is crucial when planning out your home improvement projects that you are able to find a company with experience and knowledge. But perhaps most importantly, a company you can trust.

We’ve all seen the news reports. The recent tragic death of a Lee County woman apparently strangled by her painter and news of a “handy” man who is accused of stealing jewelry, electronics and a truck from a North Naples man bring to light the dangers of hiring just anyone to come into your home to do odd jobs. According to reports, these men were invited into these homes and hired by the homeowners to do work around the house. This is a very real problem, but it’s one we can avoid by taking the proper precautions.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office warns individuals about letting just anyone in your home—suggesting that you check with the county’s licensing departments before hiring anyone (www.myfloridalicense.com).

It is also a good idea to follow these simple steps:

  • Don’t hire anyone that claims they are “in your neighborhood today” or “my guys are working next door” or he/she just happens to knock on your door and offer their services to you.
  • Hire a legitimate company.  In order to obtain workers comp and liability insurance, legitimate remodeling and home services companies have to do criminal background checks and random drug tests of all employees. Do your research, join Angie’s List, check the company website, research the Internet, and always ask for referrals.
  • Make sure the license fits the scope of work you need done. Contractors, plumbers, and electricians have very specific job descriptions; a very nice electrician should not be painting your kitchen or fixing your clogged sink.
  • Unless the person carries workers compensation insurance and liability coverage, your homeowners’ insurance may be responsible for his injuries, if they occur. Ask to see the Insurance Certificates, and make yourself a “Certificate Holder” for the length of the job, if necessary. If the contractor cannot do this, they may not be the remodeling or building contractor for you.
  • Ask for references—and actually call them until you have a level of comfort that satisfies you.

These steps may seem extreme but we have taken such precautions with other areas of our lives; we hire the only the best doctors, the sharpest financial planners, the smartest estate lawyers, why not protect our homes with the same due diligence? And one last thought—don’t go it alone. If you have your appointment set, and confirmed, invite a friend over to share a cup of coffee. You will be glad you did.

We can never truly express our gratitude…

“We can never truly express our gratitude for the house that your company built for us. Whenever we told our friends that we were building a house, we always received the requisite warnings about fighting with your builder. No one, except for us, thought that this would be an easy project. Thank you for helping us to prove our friends wrong.

Throughout the construction process, you and your employees made this an enjoyable time in our lives. Your employees were always ready and willing to help at any time and in any situation. Their expertise and engagement on the job made our family feel very comfortable throughout the entire home-building process. You are truly lucky to have employees who are as responsive and professional as the ones who worked on our home.

The best testimony for any company is word of mouth. From early on, I was told that Luxury Home Solutions represented quality. To this day, many people have commented on the quality of our home construction. Recently, an inspector for the county visited our home and after looking around for a mere five minutes, he made the comment that whoever built this house knew what they were doing. Comments such as this only confirmed the wisdom of our decision to hire you. You and your employees have done more for us than could be expected and for that, we are incredibly grateful. As long as we live in this home, we will be proud to say to anyone who will listen that this house was built by Norm and his team.”

It’s All About Our Customers

Many people think building a home is about the design, materials, sub-contractors, finishes, timelines, milestones and budgets. I would argue that it is all about the customer. I always take the time to get to know each client and understand everything that is important in their lives, from family to relationships and lifestyle.

Building homes for me is more than delivering a beautiful place to live. It is also about building relationships for that last a lifetime. I am proud to say that I still keep in contact with almost every client I built luxury homes for over the past 10 years.

It is important for me to know about the family and relationships so that I can be sensitive to the needs of each person in the family. It is ofter more complicated to understand the relationship dynamics involved in a family, but also more important.

My advice to every employee is to understand your client first, then begin the project. The following are the most important things to know about each client:

  1. Relationships and Family
  2. Lifestyle
  3. Personal Style
  4. Most important areas of their home & life
  5. Health and mobility considerations
  6. Budget and financial constraints

The key to my success in building custom homes in Southwest Florida has been to always consider the most important aspects of each clients’ lifestyle, family, health and financial situation and combine that knowledge with an understanding of construction and building considerations to create a truly custom home or remodel that delights my clients in Fort Myers, Naples and all of Southwest Florida.
