Downsizing the Home Office

There is increasing evidence that suggests a shift in the American psyche. Instead of the old adage that “bigger is better,” many are deliberately choosing to downsize. Whether it’s the uncertain economy or just a desire for simpler living, some are choosing small and cozy instead of spacious and opulent. And what was once a must-have of Southwest Florida homeowners has all but disappeared: the home office with massive leather chairs, ceiling-high bookshelves and an enormous desk to complete the picture.
Now, the trend is moving toward downsizing. Homeowners are moving away from the posh home office to create smaller, more flexible spaces that are focused on making the working environment as comfortable as the living environment.
In some cases, they are setting up shop anywhere in the house thanks to modern technology. Families are doing arts and crafts, kids are doing homework and playing computer games, and conference calls have been delegated to wherever you can find a quiet space.

As a matter of fact, our latest remodel included converting the traditional study into a guest bedroom. The owners now work from their mobile devices anywhere in the home. Which brings us to an important point. When planning a home office, it is crucial to install a wireless connection (WiFi). That way, no matter what you choose to do, any room in the house can be an office.
Some homeowners simply want an area specifically built with enough plugs to recharge cell phones, cameras, laptops and other devices; along with a smaller desk that can be configured to fit a unique space.

Furniture companies are jumping on the trend and accommodating homeowners by providing new home furniture design to cut the clutter and get organized. Unlike designs of the past, this new crop of home office furniture is scaled and outfitted to address the way people work at home: with a laptop or tablet, and multiple mobile devices that need to be charged every day.
The trend is toward L-shaped surfaces, which create a more open look. New work solutions are also appearing in the bedroom, with silhouettes that incorporate a TV cabinet, drawer chest, writing desk and electronics charging station all in one replacing the traditional armoire.
At Luxury Home Solutions we provide solutions for your space. Whether you want to stick with the traditional study or try something new, we can give you options. After all, a well-planned office space will bring both functionality and a professional atmosphere to your work.
